In 1862, the French set out to conquer Mexico by wiping out cities as they went until they reached Mexico City. They anticipated little resistance from the Mexican farmers along the way. Anticipating the attack, the Mexican forces (mostly made up of farmers) prepared to confront the French troops. The two armies collided on May 5th, 1862 in Pueblo. During the battle, General Zaragoza led the vastly outnumbered Mexican army to victory over the French forces . To this day Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5 every year to commemorate the defeat of the French.
